My ex went there for pride last year and he said it was absolutely a million times better then KC's was. Denver seems to be a city where gay people move to, not from.ĭenverian - I agree with you about Denver. We're treated like equals by all our straight neighbors too. I feel perfectly comfortable in these areas, but it just seems like there really isn't much of a gay community in KC.Įven though I'm no longer into the bar scene (partnered for 13 years and soon to be parents), Denver feels very comfortable and my neighborhood is around 20% gay couples, some with children. When I'm in town and go out with gay friends, it's usually Westport (some little Martini bar) or the Plaza. Almost all the gay friends I had in KC have left. That's pathetic that a city this size only has a couple gay bars. I wasn't trying to focus completely on the bars, but that is where most of the gay men/lesbian women tend to go - there is not a really "gay" area unless you consider Brookside/Waldo/Midtown area. DEFINITELY live in the Missouri side unless you have a partner and do not plan on ever going out and being social with other gays. If you do decide to live there, live in Missouri - I spent two years living in Johnson County and being treated like an outcast because I was 25 and not married with kids already. Bar Natasha is still there, for the piano/cabaret side, but they close at 130 and have been reportedly under pressure to get out of there. NV used to be gay, but they had tax problems/didn't pay their bills, so they got bought out and are now a straight club that caters to a more hip-hop clubbing type - high cover, long lines, and weak drinks.ĭixie Bell Closed (from what I heard - I wasn't there at the time) because of noise complaints, reports of drug use, and overall a real hateful sentiment from the local residents about getting rid of a loud, huge 3 story gay bar. Denverian is right - Missie B's and Sidekicks are the only big ones left.
